Văn học Chăm – The Literature of Champa

(song ngữ Anh – Việt)
The people and culture of Champa

At the end of second century in the Common Era (CE), the Kingdom of Champa – then under the name of Linyi or Lâm Ấp was formed along the coastal areas of present Vietnam, from Harok Kah Dhei to Pangduranga (from Quang Binh to Binh Thuan of present Vietnam) – with the ups and downs of history, the boundaries of the Kingdom of Champa was gradually restricted toward the South then disappeared completely in the first half of the 19th century. Even though after 17 centuries of birth, growth, and survival, the kingdom of Champa is nolonger in existence, but its civilization and culture are still slendidly present, together with over 150,000 people of Champa origin spreading over the cultural and Southern parts of Vietnam. They are in co-existence with 53 other ethnic peoples on the S-shaped territory of present day Vietnam.

The language of Champa

The language of Champa belongs to the linguistic family of malayo-polinesians. Within the region, the basic vocabulary … of Champa is fundamentally shared with the peoples of Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei… Within Vietnam, the language of Champa is of the same family with the languages of Ede, Churu, Raglai in the highlands. In the course of history, together with the above-mentioned peoples in Southeast Asia, Champa accepted the culkture of India, and then the culkture of Islam as well as the languages and writings of Sanskrit and Arabic into the literature and writing of Champa.

The literature of Champa

Champa is best known through the Myson sanctuary near Danang and clusters of holy towers sparsely located along central Vietnam through its sculpture, dance, and traditional handicrafts as pottery and textile. Meanwhile its literature is totally hidden. At the beginning of the 20th century, some legends and stories of Champa were collected and translated by French scholars such as E.Aymonier, A.Lands, M.Durand, P.Mus… And in the second half of that century, the efforts of G.Moussay and ThienSanhCanh introduced several classical works of Champa such as Akayet Dewa Muno, Ariya Glong Anak, Ariya Nau Ikak… to the world.

Up until 1995, when Inrasara published The literature of Champa: Outline and selections of over 1000 pages, the literature of Champa first presented its general silhouette and structure. Beside the general introduction, Inrasara translated and introduced a number of important literary documents:

In popular oral literature:
300 panwoc yaw/proverbs
50 panwoc padau/puzzles
80 panwoc padit/folksongs, and kadha rinaih dauh/children’s folksongs
15 damnuy/ritual chants

In written literature:
akayet/historical epics: Dewa Muno, Um Murup.
ariya/lyrical long poems: Ariya Bini – Cam, Ariya Cam – Bini, Ariya Xah Pakei.
ariya/historical long poems: Ariya Glong Anak, Ariya Ppo Parong, Ariya Ppo Cong, Ariya Twon Phaw, Pauh Catwai.
ariya patauw adat/family educational poems: Ariya Patauw Adat Likei, Ariya Patauw Adat Kamei, Ariya Muk Thruh Palei.
ariya/philosophial poems: Ariya Nau Ikak.

But still that is not enough. The literature of Champa is revealed less than half of its face and the treasure is largely hidden.
In every family of the elite of Champa, a wooden box of several literary manuscripts called ciet is lovingly preserved. Literature is the spiritual food of all classes, but the maintenance is poorly protected and time is the enemy of all material hand-made products. Moreover, the decrease of enthusiasm toward ancestors’ legacy among the young generation discourages them from copying the worn-out manuscripts as in the old time. Such are some of the main reasons for the paucity of Cham documents.

Realising that danger, Inrasara takes charge of the editing of the new literature of Champa under the general title of the Collection of Champa literature in 10 volumes, and about 5,000 pages, gradually to be published in the course of 2005 to 2010.
